The miata was designed in California, manufactured by a Japanese company, and then sold to hairdressers in Florida. If it was created for the USDM, then it's pretty much American.

All kidding aside, I don't think the Miata has a true anchor for national background. It's development/intended market drew inspiration from so many different places.
A Japanese company tried to make a British sports car in their US design studio and then sell it all over the globe. wut. That's kinda awesome.
